Regulation of inhibitors used in agriculture

Federated Farmers has a keen interest in the regulation of inhibitors, given the need for farmers and the primary sector to develop cost-effective mitigations, particularly for greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of nutrient loss on freshwater (“environmental effects”).

However, as underlined in the discussion document, the development of inhibitors has the potential to have adverse, significant and long-term impacts on trade perception, food safety and animal and plant health.

The regulatory and cost drivers for mitigating the environmental effects of the primary sector are increasing. As a result, the value of developing and investing in inhibitors is also increasing. We consider the high-level conversation promoted by the discussion document both long overdue and important.
