Road User Charges (Light Electric Vehicles) Amendment Bill
Federated Farmers of New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to submit to the Transport & Infrastructure Committee on the Road User Charges (Light Electric RUC Vehicles) Amendment Bill. Road user charges (RUC) work well as an effective mechanism for recovering the costs of wear and tear on the roading network from vehicle use. Operating on the basis of weight and distance aligns closely to the impact of vehicle use on our highways, roads and bridges. Electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles make use of the road system and have similar impacts on wear and tear on our roads as internal combustion engine vehicles, on a per vehicle basis, and so they should be accountable for those impacts in much the same way.
