Federated Farmers Submission for New Plymouth District Council Waste Management and Minimisation Plan

Summary of our Submission:
-We provided an overview of rural waste management issues.
-We recommended Council support of AgRecovery and Plasback, as they are the best of the current options we have for specialist waste management in rural areas.
-We recommended the future development of a regional strategy on farm waste and provide some suggestions on where to start.
-We see many benefits from the proposed Waste Management & Minimisation Plan and support the Plan’s three main goals for the next six years.
-We note that if all the proposals in the Plan were to be implemented, this would mean a 5% increase ‘on the average household rate’. While it is unclear how rural households would be affected by these changes (if at all), we would strongly oppose any such increase in the rates of rural residents.
-We recommended that Council focus first on the city and townships, before moving to develop waste management initiatives for rural areas. We could in future assist with information gathering, the development of specific rural initiatives and communication with farmers.
