Federated Farmers Submission for Central Otago District Council Waste Management and Minimisation Plan
Federated Farmers supports the Vision and Goals for the proposed WMMP. We also support the proposed targets for Total quantity of waste to landfill and Total amount recycled, however we consider the customer satisfaction target (90%) too high given current satisfaction levels and potential incongruity between satisfaction and the objectives of the plan.
We support the current rural focussed services, including collaboration with commercial services like REAP and Agrecovery.
In terms of the options for addressing the issues identified in the Waste Assessment:
- We agree that some component of Council’s landfill operations is of a ‘public good’ nature. However only a small component should be funded through rates, in the form of a uniform rate.
- We support Council considering whether extension of current services into the rural areas is feasible.
- We support the intent to provide facilities at council transfer stations for domestic quantities of hazardous waste.
