Submission on Tasman District Council Port Tarakohe Structure Plan

Federated Farmers submitted feedback thanking the Council for recognising the importance of Port Tarakohe and ensuring that Port Tarakohe is not only just maintained but also further developed to meet the evolving needs of Golden Bays community. This commitment is vital for facilitating efficient transportation of goods, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the resilience of our regional supply chains. Our feedback also requested that resilience be identified in the Port Tarakohe Issues and Options Report as a primary issue. . This stems from the vital role the port plays as an emergency fallback in instances of road closures, as highlighted during the aftermath of Cyclone Gita in 2018. In the face of such natural disruptions, Port Tarakohe emerged as a critical entry point for essential goods, mitigating the impact of the damage to Takaka Hill. Given the region's vulnerability, with its sole access route via Takaka Hill, safeguarding the operational integrity of Port Tarakohe remains an utmost priority.
