Farmers market organisers urged to think about ANZAC morning

Released 22 Apr 2010

Federated Farmers is urging Farmer Market organisers, considering opening on ANZAC morning, to reconsider.

"I'm currently attending the Cairns Group meeting of agricultural exporting countries, off the coast of Montevideo. This is where Kiwis fought in the Battle of the River Plate, so it really rams home the meaning of ANZAC day," says Don Nicolson, Federated Farmers President.

"While I will miss ANZAC Day in New Zealand, as I am a part of the New Zealand delegation led by Trade Minister, the Hon Tim Groser, it won't stop my personal act of remembrance.

"That's why I wish to ask organisers of some farmers markets who maybe thinking about opening this Sunday morning, to take stock and think again.

"For most farmers, Sunday will be a working day but a great many will take the time to reflect and pay thanks for the efforts and sacrifice of others.

"Given the late Charles Upham, the only combat solider ever to win the Victoria Cross twice was a farmer, ANZAC Day is pretty special to us all," Mr Nicolson concluded.
