Farmers to 'Meat the needs of Christchurch' by donating meat and wool

Released 03 Mar 2011

From next week, New Zealand's meat and fibre farmers will be able to make charitable donations for Christchurch if they supply a participating meat processor and/or Elders Primary Wool.

"All farmers recognise the huge national scale of this event and meat and fibre farmers want to do our bit to help," says David Rose, Federated Farmers Adverse Events spokesperson.

"That's what 'Meat the needs of Christchurch' is all about.

"It's a means for farmers when consigning wool or drafting stock, to send an instruction to a participating company to direct some of their income to Christchurch via our Adverse Events Trust.

"Federated Farmers' Adverse Events Trust is a registered charity

(CC46245) and every donor will receive a receipt from the Trust, just as soon as we get their details from participating companies.

"Many meat and fibre farmers have been doing it tough in recent years, but with things at last looking up for us, this is our way to support fellow Kiwis in need

"It's also the easiest way for many farmers to make a donation for Christchurch as there are no cheques to write or a stock drive to organise.

"Farmers, if they supply a participating company, can simply nominate a given number of animals or the value of animals/wool to be donated.  It's the simplest way to re-direct a portion of their income to a good cause in a business as usual way.

"Every single dollar donated for Christchurch via Federated Farmers'

Adverse Events Trust will go to Christchurch.  The Adverse Events Trust will re-distribute all donations to reputable charities, like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, who are doing such fantastic work on the ground.

"For some farmers, this is their chance to give back to the city for the support they've received.

"One High Country farmer told me that in 1992, around three dozen Christchurch residents voluntarily spent two days snow raking on their property.  They sadly never left their contact details so this farmer hopes he will now be able to return the favour.

"I'm inspired by the enthusiasm of our meat and fibre farmers to Meat the needs of Christchurch with this pan-industry approach,"

Mr Rose concluded.
