Federated Farmers understands the importance and benefits of training as an integral part of furthering the development and growth of agriculture in New Zealand.
Our focus is on growing the value of farming for our members to ensure we can continue to farm for generations ahead.
Federated Farmers provide leadership, business development and farm safety courses for members to develop their skill, as well as receiving a rebate on their membership subscription by attending Agriculture ITO and Open Polytechnic courses.
We also offer access to international exchange programmes.
Leadership courses
The Federation offers two leadership training opportunities for its members, the Federated Farmers' leadership programme is our commitment to grow new agricultural leaders.

Level One; ‘Getting Your Feet Wet'
This is an introduction to agricultural advocacy and Wellington politics. This is an entry level course for members who don't currently hold leadership roles but are thinking about getting more involved. Come along and learn how to be more persuasive; hone your lobby skills to get the right results; walk the corridors of power and have some fun.

Level Two; 'Shining Under the Spotlight'
This course provides a challenging and positive environment to practice your presentation skills and strategic thinking. Become a better meeting participant and chairman, and speak more confidently on the stage. This is a great workshop to gain more confidence and build your own and others self esteem.

New Zealand Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme
The New Zealand Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme helps develop emerging agribusiness leaders so as to shape the future of New Zealand agribusiness and rural affairs.
Through residential workshops, seminars and personal study over an 11-month period, twenty-four men and women who live and work in rural New Zealand meet to:
- develop solid leadership skills;
- learn how political, cultural, social, economic and physical forces impact on New Zealand agribusiness; and,
- establish networks with leaders from New Zealand and beyond.

We all know the effect the current economic climate is having on all of our businesses, so Federated Farmers, Westpac Bank and CRS Software are presenting, ‘cash flow management and software' seminars throughout New Zealand, during October and November.
These productive seminars provide farmers and rural businesses with practical financial information in an informative Q & A style and cover key points such as:
- What our economists have to say about the current climate
- What can be done about this from a financial perspective
- Short term cash flow planning and long term financial sustainability.
- Debt Structuring and financial management
- How your bank can help you
- Software available to mange the cash flow process

Scholarships & grants
AGMART Agribusiness Innovation Grants
Got a great idea? - AGMARDT is now allocating their group grants for agribusiness innovation projects. Funding will be awarded for the development or commercialisation of an idea, or to get a project to a stage where it will attract further funding. Grants in this area can be up to $120,000 and eligible groups include farmers/growers, farm consultants, vets and research or technology providers. Grants up to $20,000 are also available for pre-trial or demonstration purposes. Project inquiries for the next funding round must be submitted by Tuesday, 30 March 2010. On-farm skills
Farm Safety
Agriculture is a dangerous occupation. On average one farmer is killed every two weeks and 11 farmers are seriously injured everyday. Federated Farmers in conjunction with ACC, Agriculture ITO and Telford Polytechnic bring you FarmSafe. FarmSafe offers a series programmes specifically tailored to rural industry.

Agriculture ITO Courses
Agriculture ITO offers all Federated Farmers' members the opportunity to claim a $40 rebate on their joining or renewal fees.
Agriculture ITO industry training is designed to equip people of all levels of experience who are employed in the dairy, sheep, beef, agrichemical supply, fencing, pest control, pork, poultry, rural servicing and wool harvesting sectors with the knowledge and skills they need to enhance productivity and profitability. It is also designed to improve health and safety in the workplace and increase employee job satisfaction and staff retention.

To receive the rebate you will need to notify Federated Farmers after you have enrolled on a course. Federated Farmers will provide your rebate once Agriculture ITO has confirmed your enrolment.
Exchange programmes
AgriVenture
Federated Farmers and AgriVenture offer opportunities for young people aged between 18 and 30 to travel and work in 12 different countries. The practical aspects of the trip such as tickets, work permits and insurance are taken care of. You will stay with host families who are carefully selected and approved.
Host families provide accommodation, help with training and a standard allowance. AgriVenture schemes are based on a variety of flexible, proven programmes.
