Young Federated Farmers staff off to Japan
Released 07 Jul 2010
Two young Federated Farmers staff members left for Japan this week, after receiving a scholarship to attend the Invitation Programme for Special Fields Counterparts from New Zealand (SFC.NZ).
"We're very proud of the Federation's policy advisors, Brigid Buckley from our Wellington office and David Cooper from our Dunedin office, for being awarded these scholarships. While I'm sure the ten days that they're going to spend in Japan will be very beneficial for them personally, this experience will also have benefits for Federated Farmers and the wider rural community," says Conor English, Federated Farmers Chief Executive.
"The SFC.NZ is an innovative project created last year after bilateral talks between New Zealand's Foreign Minister, the Hon Murray McCully, and the previous Japanese Foreign Minister, Hirofumi Nakasone.
"The project aims to find New Zealand professionals, below the age of 35, who have an interest in strengthening relations with Japan and give them the chance to experience Japanese people, culture and society first hand.
"The project specifically focuses on professionals who are engaged or interested in the agricultural industry, so our Federated Farmers staff members are the ideal candidates.
"The programme aims to provide those that are selected with an opportunity to gain an understanding of how Japan's agriculture industry operates and use this to contribute to the promotion of a mutual understanding between the two countries.
"While in Japan, Brigid and David will attend lectures, take field trips and interact with the locals. Japan is an important player in the global economy and a significant trade partner for New Zealand. This project can only assist in helping the development of that relationship," Mr English concluded.
