Feed theft very concerning

Released 03 Jun 2010

Reports of a couple farm-feed thefts in the Waikato region have alarmed Federated Farmers Waikato provincial president and may highlight a wider national issue.

"In the last few weeks I have been informed of numerous feed thefts from farms, for example bailed silage being removed from pastures," says Stew Wadey, Federated Farmers Waikato provincial president.

"I find this very upsetting, especially since farmers are already facing massive challenges as they farm through the effects drought. All Waikato farmers are in the same boat at the moment and I find it worrying to think that valuable feed is being stolen from farmers.

"We often see opportunistic farm theft of things like petrol, tools and even rustling. But this feed ‘rustling' only beneficial to livestock farmers. So if this is farmers stealing from farmers this is very alarming

"I strongly condemn this activity and am asking anyone who knows anything about this to contact the police immediately. This is where neighbourhood watch is essential.

"I think it's important to highlight and raise awareness about this situation, because farmers are the eyes and ears of the rural community and can help police solve these crimes," Mr Wadey concluded.
