Economics

Exports, imports up in October - Statistics New Zealand's Merchandise Trade statistics show the value of imported and of exported goods were higher in October 2011 compared to the same period last year. Exports were up 5.3 percent to $195 million, led by meat which was up 21.7 percent, crude oil which was up 36.6 percent and wool which was up 42.9 percent. Imports increased $257 million or by 6.6 percent, with fertilisers up 164.6 percent and petroleum and products up 11.0 percent leading the increase. The trade balance for October 2011 was a deficit of $282 million, 7.3 percent of exports, but this is relatively small by recent standards. The October monthly trade balance is normally a deficit, with an average deficit of 23 percent of exports for the previous five October months. For the year ended October 2011, exports were worth $47.0 billion and imports $46.4 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $627 million.

Lamb crop up - Beef and Lamb New Zealand's Lamb Crop 2011 report shows the number of lambs tailed in the spring of 2011 was up seven percent or 1.72 million on last spring, to 26.51 million head. However, this will still be the second smallest lamb crop in at least 55 years.  A return to normal weather conditions during peak lambing, despite a brief snow event in mid August, was the main reason for this increase in lamb numbers compared with the previous year.
