Taking T150 message to the world

Released 14 Oct 2008

Chairman of Federated Farmers Meat and Fibre, Bruce Wills, took the T150 message to the Australian and American lamb industry at a Tri Nations Lamb Group meeting in the Hawke's Bay this week.

Federated Farmers has set a target for sheep farmers to reach $150 for a mid-season lamb over the next five years. Last season farmers received an average of $55 a lamb.

"Federated Farmers will be using every opportunity to ask: ‘What will this do to help New Zealand farmers reach T150?'."

"Federated Farmers fully supports the building of closer relationships between lamb producers globally if it means better prices for Kiwi farmers and a viable future for the New Zealand sheep-meat industry.

"Mike Moore's push for Americans to eat lamb burgers will continue. The United States holds huge potential if we can get more Americans eating lamb, then we all benefit as the market grows.

"Federated Farmers wants all those involved in the lamb supply chain, from the paddock to the plate, in New Zealand and around the world, from farmers to processors, researchers, marketers, transporters and supermarkets to lift their sights and help achieve the T150 goal.

Members of the Tri Nations Lamb Group from the United States, Australia and New Zealand met in Hawke's Bay to increase the amount of lamb consumed by Americans.

Members of the group are: the American Sheep Industry Association, American Lamb Board, National Lamb Feeders Association, Meat & Livestock Australia, the Sheepmeat Council of Australia, Federated Farmers of New Zealand and Meat & Wool New Zealand.
