Hazardous Substances and New Organisms

The HSNO Act imposes compliance costs for any of our members using agri-chemicals or storing fuel.

Federated Farmers works hard to minimise the costs associated with complying with HSNO.

Fuel Storage

Federated Farmers is working with the Environmental Risk Management Authority and Department of Labour to find practical and cost-effective on-farm fuel storage solutions.

There are many rules around farmers storing fuel. Check out the requirements .

Federated Farmers also has member fact sheets available to help farmers comply with these regulations.

Bunding Requirements

After lobbying from Federated Farmers, ERMA has agreed to a ‘grandparenting' of the secondary containment requirements for above ground diesel tanks. This means that above ground diesel tanks constructed or in use before April 2004 will not require secondary containment unless over 2,500 litres (as opposed to the old limit of 2,000 litres). This will save all farmers with the old 500 gallon above ground diesel tanks $1000-$2000 per tank.

Agri-chemicals

The are many rules around farmers using and storing agri-chemicals. Federated Farmers has member fact sheets available to help farmers comply with these regulations.

Who Speaks for Farmers on HSNO?

Our National Board spokesman for HSNO is Philip York. He can be contacted: pyork@fedfarm.org.nz.

Our policy advisor for HSNO is William McGimpsey. He was on board when farmers won an exemption to rules forcing them to become ‘approved handlers' for storing less than 2000 litres of petrol. The Federation lobbied hard for this. You can contact William on 0800 327 646 or email: wmcgimpsey@fedfarm.org.nz
