National news

ANZAC Day - ANZAC Day, 25 April, is observed on the day it falls. This year ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday, which means that for those employees who normally work week days, there is no entitlement to a public holiday. Unlike the Christmas and New Year public holidays, ANZAC Day is not "Monday-ised" if it falls on a weekend. Employees who normally work Sundays are entitled to a paid day off on ANZAC Day. If they work on ANZAC Day, they are entitled to time and a half for the hours they work and an alternative holiday if Sunday would be otherwise a working day for them.

Irrigation water take warning for Hawke's Bay farmers - Hawke's Bay Regional Council and Federated Farmers are urging irrigation consent holders to check their consent conditions, especially if you take water for irrigation from the Waipawa, Tukituki and Ngaruroro Rivers and Maraekakaho, Karewarewa and Mangateretere Streams. For more information, please click here.

Provincial news

Wairoa District Council Annual Plan - Wairoa District Council has released their draft Annual Plan for consultation. There are a number of aspects to the plan which we will be looking at in more detail over the next few weeks. These include the projected rural rates increases, roading funding policies and priority projects. Wairoa District Council is holding two open days on 29 and 30 April and is encouraging everyone to go along, have ‘face to face' time and discuss any aspects of council functions and services with staff and councillors. We are fully in support of this open door approach. Hilary Walker will be drafting Federated Farmers submission which needs to be lodged with the council by noon Monday, 17 May. For more information, please contact Hilary by clicking here or calling her on 0800 327 646.

Landscape and natural values in Taupo - Appeals on the Taupo District Plan Change 24, Landscape and Natural Values, are now in the Environment Court. Federated Farmers decided not to appeal as the Amenity Landscape Area classification on the planning maps does not impact on primary production, so long as primary production activities comply with existing rural zone rules. Federated Farmers is currently looking at appeals lodged by other stakeholders and deciding which ones to join as a party interested in the proceedings.  For more information, please contact Federated Farmers Rotorua/Taupo President, Neil Heather, on 07 357 2142 or regional policy advisor, Rhea Dasent, on 0800 327 646.

Economics

Rural property market remains soft - The national median farm sale price has fallen to $970,000 for the three months to March 2010, down from $1,175,000 for the same time last year and $1,685,000 two years ago. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand's monthly Rural Market Report also shows that the number of farm sales also remains low, with 210 sales in the three months to March 2010, compared to 231 for the same time last year and 717 two years ago.

Inflation subdued - Inflation was recorded at 0.4 percent for the March 2010 quarter, according to Statistics NZ's Consumer Price Index. The main factors increasing the CPI were food, especially dairy products, and petrol. The annual rate of inflation remains at 2.0 percent but it was notable that the rate of non-tradable inflation, for goods and services not exposed to international competition, was 2.1 percent, the smallest annual increase in more than eight years. With the CPI coming in under market expectations this should encourage the Reserve Bank to hold-off increasing the OCR.

Agribusiness review - Rabobank's specialist Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory (FAR) division has just released the April issue of the New Zealand & Australia agribusiness review, with commentary on the regions economic and agricultural conditions. If you would like to read the full report, please click here.
