What can you do to reach T150?

Released 03 Oct 2008

Federated Farmers of New Zealand wants all those involved in the lamb supply chain to lift their sights to help achieve the T150 goal. Anyone involved from the paddock to the plate, from farmer members to processors, researchers, marketers, transporters and supermarkets should be thinking T150.

Have your say on how farmers and others could make a difference towards getting $150 for a mid-season lamb.

A much more coordinated approach from all concerned, with a long term view to better and more sustainable returns is needed. Short term gains by all involved in the supply chain has resulted in little loyalty and no trust between players in the industry. Easier said than done! We all have a part to play to ensure that all sectors involved are rewarded for the time and capital they invest in the industry. Maybe, by way of example, PPG Wrightson with its nation wide network could ensure that ewes that are heavy in lamb are not purchased by 'Works Buyers' week after week in late autumn/early winter for slaughter, but are instead sent to an area that can carry them through to lambing. (Odd that these same 'Buyers' a few months later are lamenting the lack of lambs for slaughter.) A coordinated approach at such a basic level, although it is something we are not use to, surely must benefit our industry. Changes don't always have to big to make a big difference.

We farmers need to commit our stock to one processor and not play one off against the other. The processor can then plan forward. No different to counting the number of lambs and calves docked each year. We then plan our years expenditure.
