Economics
Commodity prices continue their surge - The ANZ Commodity Price Index rose another 3.8 percent over the first month of 2011, to hit yet another new high. Thirteen of the seventeen commodity groups registered a price rise in January. This is the fifth consecutive monthly increase in the index, with cumulative gains of 18 percent since August 2010. Looking at individual commodities, the price of skim milk powder lifted 14 percent in January, while the price of whole milk powder rose 7 percent. Wool prices lifted 11 percent in January and beef prices increased 7 percent, with both the wool and beef series at their highest levels since 1986, when the series began. Sheep meat prices rose by a more modest one percent. The New Zealand dollar (NZD) strengthened against all our major trading partners over the first month of the new year. This has dampened the lift in export commodity prices when measured in local currency terms, but nevertheless, the NZD Commodity Price Index also hit a new record high, lifting 2.3 percent in January.
Labour market disappoints - Flying in the face of good news on commodity prices, New Zealand's unemployment rate rose from 6.4 percent to 6.8 percent during the December 2010 quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand's Household Labour Force Survey. The increase in unemployment reflects a stalling of the domestic economy in the second half of 2010 as the wider economy goes through a necessary rebalancing in favour of the tradable sector. The New Zealand Dollar fell sharply in immediate response to unemployment data as financial markets digested more evidence of the sluggish recovery which puts less pressure on the Reserve Bank to tighten monetary policy. Although the increase in unemployment took the markets by surprise, economists still expect employment to rise on the back of stronger economic growth. This might take time given that the labour market is usually the last indicator to respond.

Growing your business through pasture renewal - If your business is based on growing grass, the Pasture Renewable Charitable Trust's latest free e-book is for you. It is packed full of incredibly useful advice for the dairy, sheep and beef sectors. This e-book is not about ‘a one size fits all' set of recommendations, but makes a sound business case for renewing farm pasture. As Federated Farmers President, Don Nicolson, notes in the foreword, "Farmers may not be able to do much about weather events, aside from sound preparation, but we can do a lot about the engine room of our farming system - pasture". The e-book explains why pasture renewal could put an additional $1.6 billion into farm incomes. To get your copy of the Pasture Renewable Charitable Trust's, How to be more popular with the girls e-book, then please click here.
Good time for a BBQ? - Farmers affected by October's storms in Otago and Southland have long moved on and got back to the business of farming (at least we're not getting cyclones). While higher meat and wool prices and firm milk prices will help, there will be some who will realise a significant financial impact from lost stock or production over the next month. It is important to keep up social contact with neighbours and friends, especially within your local community. A BBQ along your road or something similar could be a good way of socialising. The Rural Support Trusts are available for contact on 0800 787 254.
Shooters available - Several members of the Whangamarino Wetland Society are offering to shoot Canada Geese over the special hunting season on 26 and 27 February. Whanagamarino Wetland Society committee member Glenn Evans said he and other members of the group are keen shooters and between them have managed to clear the geese off his North Waikato farm and also off several neighbours' farms. They are keen to keep up the practice and help out fellow farmers in the region. If Waikato members are interested in having the shooters come to their property they can contact Glenn Evans on 027 228 1222 or email drainpro@xtra.co.nz
Animal feed scam - Farmers beware, there is a scam involving out-of-town fraudsters using online auction websites to sell non-existent silage and animal feed. Apparently the fraudsters are quite knowledgeable about the materials they are supposedly selling. The fraud is a little more elaborate than usual so please be extra vigilant if you are looking at purchasing animal feed this way.
Waikato Regional Policy Statement - Federated Farmers is working on a submission as we are concerned Environment Waikato's water allocation policy is coming through the back door. Enviroment Waikato dropped the prioritisation idea from Variation 6 recently. The Regional Policy Statement says that when the Council is looking at applications for water takes, they will give the first priority to town and domestic supplies, then any existing consents, with all other applications last. This will allow the slice of the pie to get bigger and bigger for municipal takes and they always get the first choice, with the portion that is left for all other uses getting smaller. If you want to apply for a new take that will be used for farming, then you might miss out. Federated Farmers will continue to fight prioritisation of water allocation through the Regional Policy Statement.
