Northland
Introduction
Federated Farmers Northland represents local farmers' views at three district councils and one regional council. The councils tend to be farmer friendly, but dialogue is always an ongoing issue. We have concerns as well about farm profitability and adverse climatic events.
Main Issues
Kaipara District Plan - Federated Farmers has been involved in the new Kaipara District Plan by lodging submissions and presenting at the Hearing in July 2010. Big topics that Federated Farmers submitted on involved landscape protection over farmland, indigenous vegetation clearance rules that were too uncertain for both council staff and people of the district to interpret, noise rules and earthworks rules with volume limits that would capture farming activities. In November 2011 Federated Farmers lodged an appeal to the Environment Court to ensure that farmers don't have to get resource consents for everyday farming activities.
- Federated Farmers presented at the Variation 1 Hearing on Tuesday 29 November 2011. Variation 1 deals with landscape protection in the Kaipara District. Federated Farmers sought changes that ensure farming is still permitted on landscapes and the recognition of farmers' contributions to amenity.
Northland Regional Policy Statement - Federated Farmers commented on the discussion document in December 2010, and is preparing further comments to the draft RPS in December 2011. The RPS is very important because is sets the policy agenda for all councils in the region. Topics like water quality and quantity, and the balance between protecting soils for production with subdivision and development will be addressed in the RPS.

You will know me because: We coordinated the opposition of a large number of landowners to the Landscape Variation to the Auckland Regional Council's Regional Policy Statement, which was subsequently put 'on hold'.
