Petrol stations re-opening, refuelling - Friday update
Released 25 Feb 2011
North Canterbury
Federated Farmers is reminding people not to resort to panic buying, which leads to service stations running out of fuel before fresh deliveries arrive.
Long queues, caused by fears of being caught without fuel, continues to be a problem around the city, despite a regular convoy of fuel trucks from Timaru.
Port of Lyttelton hopes to resume some operations tomorrow (Saturday 26 February) starting with fuel and essential supplies.
The Port states there is no need for the public to stockpile fuel as the reopening of the BP distribution terminal means fuel is being sent to service stations around the city. It also says it will have wharves operational to receive essential supplies from tomorrow and has already released medical supplies.
Also petrol retailers Caltex, BP, Shell and Mobil will maintain their convoy of trucks bringing regular petrol and diesel deliveries into the region from Timaru to cope with the high demand for fuel. Caltex spokesperson Sharon Buckland told Federated Farmers there had been a fresh crew of five truck drivers flown to the South Island to replace tired drivers on the fuel convoy between Timaru and Christchurch. She said the convoy was refuelling as fast as it could.
The companies report the South Island has plenty of fuel with more supplies available in Dunedin and Nelson.
Usually a station refuel would last at least a day, but the rush for petrol and diesel has caused some stations to run out in as little as four hours.
As a result some petrol stations around the city have limited stocks and may only have one type of fuel, such as diesel left.
BP recommended calling ahead to Christchurch stations to make sure they have stocks as some stations are running out of petrol due to panic buying, but still have plenty of diesel.
Caltex
Panic buying has placed a strain on fuel supplies around Christchurch, but there are good reserves further afield, such as in the Riverland site in Blenhiem, Kaikoura and Amberley in the north and Timaru, Washdyke and Ashburton in the south.
Ms Buckland urged those who could refuel before they reached the Christchurch area, to do so.
