See how your food is grown at Federated Farmers Farm Day
Released 20 Jan 2010
You're invited to visit the Heather Dell Angus stud, one of 24 farms throughout New Zealand opening its gates for Federated Farmers Farm Day, on the last Sunday of March (March 28, 2010).
"The Rotorua-Taupo Federated Farmers team is looking forward to meeting and talking with families about what we do at Heather Dell," says Neil Heather, Rotorua-Taupo Federated Farmers President and host of the province's Farm Day.
"Federated Farmers Farm Day aims to promote New Zealand's world class agricultural sector, with a strong focus on the environment under this year's theme, The Green Farmer.
"My family and I are opening our gates so everyone can see farm animals up close, learn what they eat and find out how we keep our animals healthy and happy.
"The Heather family farm, just outside of Rotorua, is a beautiful, steep to mid range 325 hectare hill country property, running 110 Angus stud breeding cows and 1,200 Romney breeding ewes.
"85 hectares is in fenced off gullies and riparian strips, with a further 10 hectares planted in native bush, protected by a QEII covenant.
"To the Heather family, sustainable farming means managing our farm operations so as to ensure the environment is protected, our animals are healthy and our business is successful.
"Farm Day offers the general public and farmers alike the chance to see how the Heather family works in harmony with the land that forms both our home and livelihood.
"Local farmers will offer guided walks, tell stories, give demonstrations and invite everyone to lend a hand. No questions will be off limits, Farm Day is an open learning opportunity, but also a fun day out for all involved," Mr Heather concluded.
