Introduction
Federated Farmers Ruapehu represents local farmers' views at one district council and two regional councils.
Main Issues
The main issues in our province are dealing with Horizon's proposed Regional Policy Statement, ‘One Plan' and Environment Waikato's restrictions on farming near Lake Taupo. We are also concerned at the lack of profi tability for wool, lamb and beef farming.
The Regional Policy Statement (RPS) - This is a very important document for farmers in the entire Waikato Region because it might direct councils to have rules and control certain farming activities. Tutsan Action Group (TAG)
Sick and tired of dealing with tutsan, a group of Ruapehu farmers have formed the Tutsan Action Group (TAG) to investigate ways of dealing with the persistent weed.
TAG has managed to gather a subsidy from the Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF) to research a biological control, but they need local farmers to register their interest and pledge in order to gain continued funding from SFF.
It's a numbers game. At a meeting held in early 2010, approximately 25 farmers pledged $100 each year, for the next 3 years to help fund biological research. If you would like to pledge your support, please email Geoff Burton, by clicking here.
