Trucking around at South Canterbury Farm Day

Released 16 Mar 2011

Federated Farmers is inviting all families in the South Canterbury region to pop out to Andrew and Vicky Steven's farm on 20 March for Farm Day, a chance to experience the way of life that makes up New Zealand's farming industry.

"This is a great chance to see our countryside, reconnect with the rural community and understand just how modern farming works," says Dr William Rolleston, Federated Farmers South Canterbury president.

"Federated Farmers members Andrew and Vicky Steven have kindly opened up their multi-purpose farm on Sunday 20 March to anyone who wants to truck around the paddock discovering what farmers do first-hand.

"This will be a great informational day for the whole family and it's free of charge. We will be having demonstrations on lamb drafting, sheep shearing and wool handling.

"Because the Steven's farm is multipurpose, visitors will also get to see the cropping program, deer sheds and dairy grazing.

"We will also be hosting several discussions on the importance of conservation and the efforts taken to ensure the farming environment remains sustainable.

"The Steven's farm is huge and hilly, so we've put on trucks to drive our visitors around.

"All in all, Farm Day is a great chance for anyone interested to have a face to face chat with the farmers and learn something about life outside the cities.

"Our real goal here is to get those who haven't visited a farm in a while to come and learn something with us in the paddock. We want to turn kids and their families on to the whole farming process, from pasture to plate," Dr Rolleston concluded.
