Federated Farmers Submission for the Local Government (Community Well-being) Amendment Bill

The Local Government (Community Well-being) Amendment Bill seeks to restore the 2002-12 purpose statement for local government, reintroducing the ‘four well-beings’ (economic, social, environment and cultural).  It signifies a renewed emphasis on an ‘empowered’ local government, with councils encouraged to define their role within very broad and activist parameters.  Federated Farmers submits that the Bill should not proceed and that it should be deferred until after the Productivity Commission’s upcoming inquiry into local government funding has been completed and its findings and recommendations considered by the government.
