Submission on Emissions Budgets Published in 2022 and the First Emissions Reduction plan

Federated Farmers have a long history of engaging in climate policy in New Zealand and internationally. This includes engaging in policies designed to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and policies designed to improve New Zealand’s ability to adapt to the impacts expected to occur as a result of climate change.

Federated Farmers is committed to the New Zealand agricultural sector achieving a 2050 goal of becoming warming neutral, as is consistent with the 2015 Paris Agreement. Such a goal demands that short-lived flow GHG emissions (biogenic methane) are reduced, but not to net-zero, by 2050 and demands that long-lived stock GHG emissions (mainly nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide) are reduced to net zero by 2050.

The submission contains links to many recent submissions made by Federated Farmers that cover climate change and that are relevant to both the emissions budgets and the emissions reduction plan.

In addition to the content of these submissions, Federated Farmers would like to highlight the following three points:
  1. The need for split gas emissions budgets
  2. The need for zero-carbon equivalent biogenic methane reduction targets; and
  3. The need for clarity on the purpose of the new Centre for Climate Action on Agricultural Emissions
