Recognising space-plantings and exotic hardwoods in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme

Federated Farmers of New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to submit on MPI’s consultation document Maximising Forest Carbon Programme: Recognising space-plantings and exotic hardwoods in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme.

Many farmers have planted areas on their farms that are registered under the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), these areas have often been planted to support and diversify incomes for the farm business. Farmers, particularly where erosion on sloped land needs to be managed, utilise spaceplanted poplar and willow. Poplar and willow provide benefits additional to carbon sequestration, including shelter and shade for livestock, fodder, and good pasture growth below the trees.
