Submission: Proposed National Policy Statement for Natural Hazard Decision-making

Federated Farmers of New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the Ministry for the Environment on the Proposed National Policy Statement for Natural Hazard Decision-making (NPS) consultation document. This letter will focus primarily on the concepts related to natural hazard decision making proposed policies and avoids discussion on resource management legislation, including the potential reforms in this space.

In principle we support a consistent national policy on natural hazard decision making. The need for this national direction has been highlighted in the last twelve months with significant damage done to property during floods in Auckland, Northland, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay. Auckland Council have calculated that the 2023 floods badly affected 800 homes, resulted in the loss of 5 lives and the cost to the city could reach $4 billion.
